Labor Day, football, and pumpkin-spice things are here, so we know fall is on the way. But the Summer 2022 travel season, when travel came roaring back, is still going strong. Destinations like Italy and Greece continue to have robust bookings through the month. As one travel partner for the Amalfi Coast remarked recently, "September is the new June" when it comes to measuring peak season.
This momentum will continue into the fall and festive seasons. A recent survey by Virtuoso, a network of agencies specializing in curated and experiential travel, found that 45% of travelers are ready to travel within the next three months.
Some look to explore European destinations like Italy, Greece, Spain and Ireland, while others prefer to stay closer to home.
With the continued travel surge comes limited availability, price increases, and less-flexible cancellation policies. Now more than ever, an advisor like me can help you navigate today's travel landscape.
The Top Five Travel Destinations for Fall
According to industry booking data, these are the most in-demand destinations for fall travel:
Number 1: US Destinations
For those craving travel but not ready to go abroad, the US offers plenty of destination options to choose from. A classic road trip is a great way to explore under-the-radar national parks or dramatic fall foliage.
Some travelers can't wait to visit places like Vail and Park City during ski season or NYC to see the Big Apple in its holiday finery. And Hawaii is spectacular any time of year.
Number 2: Italy
Europe was in high demand this summer, occupying seven of the top ten travel destinations this season. The euro's parity with the US dollar adds to the appeal of a European vacation.
Of course, Italy perennially tops many travelers' bucket lists and suits every type of traveler. From the arts and architecture of history-rich cities like Rome, Venice, and Florence to the gems of its Mediterranean coastline like Amalfi, Positano, and Capri, to its unbeatable culinary and wine destinations, there's so much to experience in Italy. If a grand Italian tour is on your list, be sure to plan ahead because availability is limited.
Number 3: Mexico
There's so much to love about Mexico in addition to its fantastic beaches. Many of its ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins and colonial cities have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its oceans draw whale watchers in addition to sunbathers and snorkelers. And Mexico City and Oaxaca are among the world's most exciting culinary scenes.
All this variety is a short flight from many North American cities, making it easy to plan a getaway.
Number 4: France
France recently lifted Covid restrictions for international travelers, making it easier to return to some of the world's most beloved destinations.
A Seine river cruise is a great way to visit the region's many picturesque medieval villages. One of river cruising's great advantages is its ships dock right in the heart of historic towns, some of which can only be accessed via the river. Not to mention the countless wine tasting opportunities. Plus there's so much to see in Paris before or after a river cruise.
Number 5: Turks and Caicos
Restorative travel is a big trend right now, and there may be no better place to tune out the world than a cabana on a pristine stretch of beach. Every Turks and Caicos island has miles of white sand beaches surrounded by crystal-clear ocean waters.
With lots of 90-minute direct flights from Miami, an island getaway is close at hand.
